Giraffes are identified by their long necks, equally long and spindly legs and spotted coats. Most Giraffes have a tan, white or yellow coats that are spotted with brown, square shapes. They are mainly Found in Africa.

Height And Weight

A Giraffe’s Neck is 5 feet long and weighs about 500 lbs.. These animal’s legs are also 5 feet long

Females grow up to 15 feet tall and weigh up to to 1400 lbs. (680 kgs), while Males grow up to 19 feet tall and weigh up to 3100 lbs.

  Habitat

Group of Giraffes is aptly called a tower, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Towers typically have 10 to 20 members,  Who lives in the tower can vary. Giraffes are so social that they don’t have territories. Some towers consist of all females and their young or all male or mixed genders.

Giraffes only sleep around  15 to 20 minutes or less per day.They are always alert after awaking from sleep.

Diet

Giraffe’s long necks allow them to reach leaves, seeds, fruits, buds and branches high up in mimosa and acacia trees. It can eat hundreds of pounds of leaves per week, these are herbivores which means they eat only green leaves.

Giraffes eat a lot, yet they can go without water for weeks at a time.Giraffes get most of their moisture from the plants they eat.

Off springs

Offspring of giraffe are agile.They can stand up and walk  in just an hour after their birth. New calves are large and 6 ft tall. They weigh about 100 to 150 lbs.Some times Mother giraffe may leave the calves alone, that time the baby will lie down and wit for mother to come back.

Female Giraffe are termed  as cows , while the male giraffe is termed  as bulls. After mating the gestation period is about 14 months and female giraffe gives birth to baby giraffe. Baby Giraffe is called as Calves. As mother Giraffe gives birth in standing position, The Calf will drop to the ground during birth. The height of fall can be 5 ft as per height of mother giraffe.

Mother giraffe takes care of the calf and the calf is weaned for about 12 months. The calves reach their maturity at age of 3 to 6 years.

The life span of these animal is 10 to 15 years in nature and they can live up to 20 to 25 years in captivity.

Long tongue of Giraffe helps them in eating as the giraffe can pull leaves with the help of tongue.

Giraffes are found i savanna areas of Sub Saharan Africa.

Giraffes get most of their moisture from the plants they eat.They spend most of their day time in eating leaves and other parts of the trees. The Mature Giraffe can eat up to 100 lb leaves and twigs in a day.

As the height of this animal is much more than other  animals, It can eat leaves located higher . Particularly they prefer Acacia trees to feed on.

Giraffe walk in a different way, while walking they move both legs on one side of the body and then other. This type of walking is unique for Giraffe.

They run similarly as other animals. They can run with the speed of 55 km per hour But they can not run for long time.

Giraffe are thought as a combination of the Camel and Leopard. The body pattern of giraffe is similar to that of leopard. So this animals is called as Camel Leopards.

Giraffe’s Unique Facts

Giraffe needs to drink water on every second day and fulfill the  water requirement from the plants it eats the whole day. Their height may make it difficult to drink water.

As mother Giraffe gives birth in standing position, the baby giraffe has to fall on the ground when it comes out of the mother giraffe body.  The height of fall can be 5 ft as per height of mother giraffe.

Giraffes have cardiovascular system with highly specialized and enormous heart to work in such shaped body of giraffe. When giraffe lowers the head, the excessive blood flow to the brain is prevented by a series of one way valves in Jugular veins.

the noises made by giraffes are below the hearing capacity of human beings so we can not hear their noises and find giraffes as calm animals.

Conservation Status

Governments and biologists are focusing on efforts made in direction to gain  success for future of the four species.  The population of this species is challenged due to shrinkage of their habitats and poaching for the skin.

Good luck bracelets and threads are made from the tail of Giraffe.African Giraffes have much more decline in their population in last 30 years.
